Some varieties of EBV are less concentrated on the central nervous system and instead make their focus the lymphatic system and organs. In these cases, as the virus advances to later phases and stages, many virus cells also stay behind to attack and inflame lymph nodes around the lungs, heart, liver, and neck, creating swelling and scar tissue throughout the lymphatic system and in and around the organs. This gets to the point of sarcoidosis by Stage Four of the virus—which means that sarcoidosis is an indication that someone has also developed a thyroid condition (Stage Three EBV) by this point, though again, it’s not thyroid-caused.
