Hello and welcome to the Medical Medium Blog: HEALTH ARTICLES! I'm so happy to have you here. Visit this blog anytime for inspiration and valuable insights on foods that will help you to heal and feel your best. Happy reading!
There are a lot of types of fasts being promoted right now, like water fasting, dry fasting, juice fasting, intermittent fasting and more. But with so many different beliefs and theories being promoted, there’s also a lot of confusion.
When fasting is done right, it can be a very helpful healing tool, but so often the way it’s done prevents true healing. So I want to offer some guidance and make sure you understand the safest way to fast for your constitution and circumstances.
Before we move into the details of different fasts, it’s important to understand how your body—and especially your liver—works. Read Liver Rescue: Answers to Eczema, Psoriasis, Diabetes, Strep, Acne, Gout, Bloating, Gallstones, Adrenal Stress, Fatigue, Fatty Liver, Weight Issues, SIBO & Autoimmune Disease for advanced healing information that explains the liver’s role in detoxification and health in far more detail than an article can. The book is an important foundation for anyone looking to cleanse, fast or invest in their health.
What Fasting Means For Your Liver
Your liver is an intelligent and powerful organ. It has a critical job of processing and disarming the many toxins we inherit and encounter in our modern world: toxic heavy metals, undiscovered strains of viruses and bacteria, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, solvents, plastics, pesticides, everyday household chemicals and more.
Your liver works to capture those toxins and hold onto them in order to keep them from floating around in your bloodstream and harming your heart, brain, central nervous system and other organs. When the circumstances are right and your liver is able to detoxify, it releases these toxins so they can be eliminated ideally through your urine and bowel movements.
In Liver Rescue I talk about how the liver doesn’t like to be pushed. It’s like a child standing on the diving board for the first time working up the courage to jump when she’s ready. If someone sneaks up and suddenly pushes that child from behind, trust is broken. And, she’s going to be more wary about getting back up on that board to jump again.
The same thing happens to your liver if it’s pushed into detoxifying through an unsafe or harsh fast. An inappropriate fast forces your liver to release too many toxins at once. When the toxins flood the bloodstream, the kidneys and bowel can still only eliminate a small portion at a time. The rest floats around in the bloodstream.
This sudden barrage of poison in the bloodstream causes two kinds of problems. First, the toxins can wreak havoc on your pancreas, spleen, nervous system, brain and heart. Second, the spillover puts your liver in a state of alarm, so the organ works on overdrive trying to gather up and seal in the toxins once more. It’s exhausting to your liver, which makes it harder for it to heal later and potentially more reluctant to release toxins in the future. After all, like the child who was pushed off the diving board and now fears jumping off, the liver that was pushed might hold tighter to the toxins in the future (which means the liver itself becomes increasingly toxic).
When Not to Fast
One important thing to know about fasting is that doing it right takes preparation. If your liver is really toxic, it’s not the time to do a fast. If you’ve been eating a standard American diet, a lot of animal products, or a high fat, high protein diet, or if you haven’t been eating many fruits and vegetables, it’s not a good idea to do a fast. Even if you’ve been eating a clean diet for a long time but you’ve inherited poisons or been exposed to a lot of chemicals or pathogens, it’s also best to not jump into a fast right away.
Fasting should also be avoided by people who have a weaker or sensitive constitution, which is the result of an overload of pathogens and toxins in the body (see Liver Rescue for more information), and by people who have nervous system problems, adrenal issues or a heart that isn’t that strong.
In all of these cases, instead of doing something intense like a fast, you’re much better off making continual, gradual changes. This way, your liver can safely and continually flush out toxins. With time, you’ll clean things up to the point where you’re ready to consider a fast.
Where to Begin for Safe Cleansing
A great place to start is by drinking lemon water upon waking and then 30 minutes later drinking 16 ounces of straight celery juice. Start avoiding the foods that feed pathogens, including gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, corn and canola oil. It’s also important to avoid pork. Anyone who wants to cleanse and heal can help their body by lowering their fat intake, whether it comes from healthy or unhealthy sources (although the unhealthy sources are best to reduce or eliminate first.) The lower your fat intake, the easier your liver can detoxify and heal and the more prepared you will be to do a smartly designed fast when the time comes.
If you don’t think you eat much fat, consider how much protein you consume. Protein-rich foods such as eggs, beef, chicken, soy products, nuts, and others are inherently high in fat also. Continually eat better and better, so your liver can adapt to the changes over time.
After you’ve cleaned up your diet with these suggestions, then you’ll be at a point where you can consider the 28-day cleanse I describe in my book Medical Medium, or the 90-day cleanse in Thyroid Healing, or the Liver 3:6:9 Cleanse from Liver Rescue. All of these cleanses are designed to work perfectly in harmony with the body’s needs, not to push the liver in an unproductive and harmful way like most cleanses and diets out there, and are based on plenty of delicious foods to still give your body the nourishment it needs to heal.
At some point, your body will be cleared out enough and nutritionally fortified enough that you can try a fast. For some people, it may even take a year or two of drinking celery juice and following my food guidance or cleanses to get to the point where you’re ready. At that time, here’s what you need to know:
Water fasting is what it sounds like—it means you ingest water only, and no food. Short term water fasting is a helpful tool for some people in some circumstances. But it is definitely not for people who haven’t gotten to a point where their bodies are already pretty well cleaned out and who have healthy levels of nutrients in their bodies.
At that point, if you want to water fast, it should typically only be done for one to two days. It’s critical you stay well hydrated and drink plenty of water during that time. It’s also really important to stay home, get lots of rest and take it easy during a water fast. Weekends are a good time to try it. Driving around or doing physical work is not safe. When you’re water fasting, you can suddenly get a dizzy spell, experience a big blood sugar drop or feel weak.
The other thing to know is that people can easily become addicted to water fasting. Once they go two or three days, sometimes they don’t want to stop. They want to do four days and then five and it can become hard to break the addiction. On a water fast, people can sometimes experience moments of clarity and euphoria because of the adrenaline that’s released during water fasting so they want to keep going. Be careful. It’s better to do water fasts periodically—even once a month if you wish—but only for a couple days versus doing a longer water fast.
Unfortunately, a lot of people try a water fast because they’re sick. They’ve often been sick for a while, are nutritionally deficient as a result and have viruses in their system (learn more about the many undiscovered strains of viruses that cause hundreds of different illnesses and symptoms, including autoimmune conditions, in Thyroid Healing and Medical Medium).
Under these conditions (or for people who try to water fast too long), the fast weakens the immune system. That allows the viruses that made people sick in the first place to proliferate, so people end up getting sicker as a result. Many people who fast, including fasting experts, don’t understand what’s really happening, and they mistakenly attribute the illness surge as a sign of detoxification.
People who have neurological problems should definitely stay away from water fasts. It’s too hard on the central nervous system and can weaken it greatly. That means water fasting is not for you if you experience issues like anxiety, depression, headaches, migraines, chronic fatigue, restless legs syndrome, fibromyalgia, back pain, ringing in the ears, tremors, twitches, bad nerve pain or burning sensations. People who have neurological issues also typically take longer, maybe a couple of weeks, to recover from a water fast.
If you’re interested in water fasting, I recommend reading Liver Rescue before you get started. It’ll give you a great background on what’s happening in your body and what you need to do to cleanse and prepare your body so you can fast safely when the time is right.
Here’s what you need to know about dry fasting: Never do it. Ever. Dry fasting is when you don’t eat or drink anything, not even water. This is traumatizing and harmful to your body and brain. It fills your bloodstream with so many poisons you can nearly go into sepsis. The toxins spill out of the liver but they don’t get flushed out of the body. Dry fasting is incredibly destructive for your liver, kidneys, nervous system and brain—it actually kills brain cells.
Juice fasting, which is when you only consume juice, can be a good choice. But again, as with water fasting, you need to be prepared. You need to have spent enough time drinking daily celery juice and lemon water, eliminating the foods that feed pathogens, lowering your fat and animal product intake and eating lots of fruits and vegetables. These steps will get your body cleansing on their own. Then, as I mentioned earlier, you can try the Liver 3:6:9 Cleanse from Liver Rescue and/or the 28-day cleanse I describe in Medical Medium. These cleanses are safe and effective and can even become your permanent way of life if you wish.
Then you may be ready for a juice fast. But take it easy—don’t jump into a long-term juice fast. It can put too much pressure on your liver. It’s also important that you don’t drink only green juices (like kale, spinach and celery) that lack carbohydrates. One reason you need to include some carbohydrates is to slow down your cleanse. And again the purpose of that is so that your liver doesn’t get forced into dumping too much poison into your bloodstream at once. Also, the fruits you would include as part of your juices contain important nutrients that will nourish your body and also support your adrenals as you cleanse.
Include at least one of the following carbohydrates in at least one juice per day: apples, cucumbers, pears, oranges and watermelon. Including these carbohydrates also protects your brain because it needs the glucose, or natural sugar, from these fruits to keep from getting injured during a fast.
Intermittent fasting is when you limit the number of hours you eat over a day, usually by waiting to eat until later in the day. I support this for certain people for a period of time in some circumstances. Some people feel like it’s not helpful to eat right away in the morning because their digestive system can’t handle it yet. In this case, I recommend people drink lemon water (with some raw honey if possible) and even celery juice if they can in the morning and then wait until maybe 11 a.m. for their first snack. Or, some people can go a little while longer if it feels right. Then later in the afternoon and in the evening they eat their meals.
This can be a helpful method for people who have an inflamed intestinal tract or hypersensitive nerves in the lining of their stomach, duodenum and small intestinal tract. For these people, any time they eat, it rubs and hurts. They may feel better if they wait half a day to eat, and it gives their digestive tract a rest. If that’s you and it feels better, you can try intermittent fasting for a while. Just remember it’s not a long-term way to eat. Rather, it’s something you may need to do for a month or for six months or so but it’s then important to return to eating frequently so you can properly care for and give your adrenals, brain, liver and the rest of the body the critical glucose they need.
You can read more about why it’s important to eat frequently in the Adrenal Fatigue article on the blog. To give your body the best support possible, consider grazing on snacks like these Adrenals snacks every two hours. Eating something every couple or few hours is especially helpful for people who have issues with their adrenals, blood sugar, nervous system or liver.
Moving Forward in Health
I highly recommend you check out Liver Rescue before doing any fasts so you can get more guidance on doing it safely. This will protect you for the long haul and help you heal. Sometimes people who have done a fast that didn’t truly serve their body in the past “hit the wall” in terms of their health and mental clarity years later because their brain runs out of glycogen storage (which an unhealthy fast dramatically accelerates). In these cases they usually don’t even know what they lost by doing the fast, and they never restored themselves afterward. Trying to “fast-track” your health with a fast usually backfires.
One other red flag to watch out for is fasting programs that include herbs and tinctures that have alcohol in them. Any kind of alcohol kills the beneficial internal bacteria and microorganisms in your gut. If a program sells products with alcohol, it’s important to avoid it.
Another piece of information that’s missing from many fasts is the importance of proper recovery. It’s so critical for your health and healing that you take the time to build yourself back up afterward. This is something I cover more in Liver Rescue as well, but one of the best ways to recover is to continue drinking a lot of straight celery juice every day. This will protect and restore your brain, liver and entire body. Take your time as you ease back into eating. Stick with fresh fruits, leafy greens and vegetables and their juices for a period until you feel you have adjusted back to consuming solid food. This could be a good time to do another round of the 28-day cleanse in Medical Medium.
I hope this information helps you to know whether fasting is right for you at this time and to make the best decision for your health.
When a pathogen such as Epstein-Barr virus is residing in your liver and feeding off of different toxins such as the heavy metals copper and mercury, disruptive skin conditions can appear. Different pathogens—and even different strains of the same pathogen—have different appetites for different toxins. Depending on which combination is present in your liver, you’ll get a different rash.
The skin reactions form because as the virus feeds off its desired food, it also eliminates it, releasing a much more toxic, destructive form of the original copper or mercury—that is, a dermatoxin. A vaporized methyl toxin, this dermatoxin can travel through connective tissue and organs with ease. If you have a sluggish liver, this remanufactured poison can back up into the lymphatic system find its way up to the skin, leaving deposits in the subcutaneous fatty tissue and getting trapped there.
Releasing dermatoxins to the surface of your skin is your body’s masterful way of protecting you. The dermatoxins are highly inflammatory to skin tissue, causing blemishes, fissures, cracks, scabs, flaking, scarring, bleeding, and rashes of all kinds.
The level to which these symptoms disrupt your life can depend on the strain of EBV or other virus present, the levels of heavy metals or other toxins present inside the liver, how sluggish the liver is, and your current diet, which could contain unhelpful foods that are feeding the underlying cause, the viral strain.
Celery juice destroys the outer cell membrane of the virus and fights back against it, in time lowering your viral load. Celery juice helps restore your immune system to help fight off the virus. It also flushes toxins out of the liver, which is a critical support to help remove the toxic heavy metals that the virus feeds on that causes eczema and psoriasis. It also strengthen a weakened liver, which anyone with eczema and psoriasis has.

Acne is caused by streptococcus bacteria that has strengthened over time from antibiotics, which you may have taken at some point in your life or been exposed to unknowingly through food and water supply.
Streptococcus nests into the liver and when the liver and lymphatic system weaken, strep can travel and reach the skin. Sebum oil is produced to try to stop the strep from causing harm to your skin.
Because the strep has been well fueled from foods it feeds on, like dairy, eggs, gluten, canola oil, corn, and soy, along with a plethora of toxins in the liver, it is extremely vital at this point. The sebum oil isn’t enough to stop it. Now the skin’s immune system kicks into higher gear, prompting the production of sebum oil at even larger volumes as a last attempt to trap the bacteria and safeguard your skin.
When strep is strong, it fights and survives the lymphocytes and killer cells just below the epidermis. It climbs up into the outer layer of your skin and cystic acne results. Outbreaks can be mild or devastating. So much goes into what determines a mild versus aggravating versus extreme case of acne, including how many strains of strep you have, how many toxins such as heavy metals are present in the liver and subcutaneous tissue for strep to feed on, how many antibiotics you have used or otherwise ingested over a lifetime, what happened before your lifetime that you inherited, what kind of adrenaline surges you experience in daily life, pesticide exposure, and what your diet’s like.
Celery juice’s undiscovered sodium cluster salts act as an antiseptic and expose and destroy strep bacteria. Celery juice also helps detoxify and strengthen the liver so strep doesn't find it to be such a happy place for it to nest. Celery juice also strengthens the immune system so it can help kill off the strep and help prevent it from becoming acne in the future. The lymphocytes you rely on to stop strep in the lymphatic highways also feed off vitamins and minerals found in celery juice.

L-lysine is a foundational amino acid that is most commonly known as being a building block of protein and as a helpful supplement for preventing and addressing cold sores. But L-lysine offers much more than this.
Powerful Weapon Against Viruses
L-lysine doesn’t just fight the Herpes Simplex virus that causes cold sores. It hinders and stops all herpetic family viruses, which is critical because this family of viruses are responsible for hundreds of different chronic symptoms and illnesses that millions of people across the globe are suffering with. Medical science and research does not yet know this, which is one of the main reasons so many still suffer. If the true cause of so many illnesses and symptoms isn’t yet known by medical communities, how can someone get the answers they need to heal and end their suffering from their doctor or natural health practitioner? Thankfully, the Medical Medium information is reaching more and more doctors and health practitioners who are using it to help their patients and clients recover their health.
There are many viruses that fall within the herpes family, all of which have multiple undiscovered strains. At this time, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has over 60 strains, shingles has 31 (both rashing and non-rashing), HSV-1 has close to 10 strains, HSV-2 has around 15 strains, plus other Herpes Simplex viruses. Then there’s 20 strains of cytomegalovirus causing health issues and many undiscovered strains of Human Herpesvirus (HHV). These viruses are responsible for more symptoms and conditions than you could imagine.
If you or someone you love suffers with canker sores, cold sores, other mouth and tongue sores, chronic fatigue, cancer, eczema, multiple sclerosis, migraines, colitis, autoimmune conditions, insomnia, hot flashes, thyroid problems, aches and pains, rheumatoid arthritis, weight struggles, eye floaters, tingles, numbness, dizziness, burning pain, frozen shoulder, heart palpitations, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, goiters, twitches, muscle spasms, Raynaud’s syndrome, psoriasis, sarcoidosis, diminishing vision, parkinson’s, ALS, neuropathy, joint pain, or hundreds of others, it means you have a virus inside your body that’s causing your health problems. In order to heal and prevent future worsening of symptoms or the onset of other illnesses and symptoms, it’s critical you know how to lower the viral load in your body. L-lysine is one of the critical supplements that can help you do this. It impairs the ability of viral cells to move and reproduce.
L-lysine is a powerful weapon against cancers, liver disease, inflammation, and all of the symptoms and conditions caused by viruses, which means all of the above and more.
Liver and Immune System Support
I share in Liver Rescue that “L-lysine enters the liver and acts as a smokescreen to all of the viruses that are responsible for liver disease and autoimmune disorders. Viruses hate lysine. It’s like the powder that comes out of a fire extinguisher—a viral retardant that deters viruses from proliferating. L-lysine strengthens the immune system in the liver and aids in some of the organ’s most important functions.”
L-lysine acts as an anti-inflammatory to the entire nervous system, especially the central nervous system and the vagus and phrenic nerves. This is because L-lysine inhibits and reduces viral loads, which means there’s less viral neurotoxins produced to inflame the nervous system. For more on how viruses create neurotoxins and the conditions this leads to, you can read Thyroid Healing.
Supplementing with L-lysine
If you’re dealing with a chronic symptom or illness, taking only 500mg of L-lysine a day (as is commonly recommended) might not be sufficient. If you’re fighting off Epstein-Barr or another aggravating herpes family virus, including those that cause cold sores and canker sores, a higher dosage of L-lysine may be necessary. That being said, it is important to discuss the exact dosage you plan on taking with a practitioner so that you can best support your specific health issues. If you aren’t struggling with a symptom or condition, but want to help shield yourself from picking up one of the hundreds of possible strains, taking a smaller dose of lysine can be a protective step. You can also refer to Liver Rescue for specific supplement dosages for various symptoms and conditions, many of which include L-lysine. My favorite L-lysine can be found on my preferred supplements page.
Foods Rich in L-Lysine
There are some foods that also contain L-lysine, although if you’re dealing with a viral-related symptom or condition, you may wish to supplement with L-lysine too, not just eat foods with L-lysine.
Potatoes are full of nutrients, including L-lysine. The humble potato is one of the ultimate EBV and virus killers and is wonderful to include in your diet despite it being under attack by many diet trends today. These diets and the experts behind them don’t understand how often viruses are behind chronic illnesses and symptoms, nor do they understand what the body needs to heal from them. Steamed potatoes without any cheese, cream, butter, bacon bits and other troublesome foods served with them are a deeply healing food. Kiwis, apples, cherries, and pears also contain L-lysine and are helpful to include regularly in your diet.
Spirulina is often deemed the most nutritionally complete of all foods and has countless uses as a supplement for maintaining good health and preventing diseases. This is because it contains a plentiful supply of many important nutrients and antioxidants, including protein, complex carbohydrates, iron, and vitamins A and K, as well as B complex. It’s also rich in chlorophyll, fatty and nucleic acids, and lipids. Spirulina is rich in gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA, a compound found in breast milk that helps develop healthier babies.
Best Source of Beta-Carotene
Spirulina provides a profusion of carotenoids such as best-carotene and yellow xanthophylls. In fact, spirulina is the richest beta-carotene food. The beta-carotene found in spirulina is ten times more concentrated than carrots.
Iron is essential for building a strong internal system, yet it is one of the most common mineral deficiencies (zinc is the most common). Spirulina is rich in iron, magnesium and trace minerals and is easier to absorb than iron supplements. Ten grams of spirulina can supply up to 70% of the minimum daily requirements for iron.
About 60% of spirulina’s dry weight is protein, which in the form it comes in within spirulina, is essential for growth and cell regeneration. It’s a good replacement for fatty meat and dairy products.
Builder of Beneficial Flora
Spirulina suppresses bad bacteria like E. coli and stimulates beneficial flora like lactobacillus and bifidobactria in the digestive tract to promote healthy digestion and proper bowel function.
Healthy flora is one of the foundations of good health. It increases the body’s ability to absorb nutrients from the foods we eat and helps protect against infection.
Spirulina has a completely unique composition of phytonutrients, including chlorophyll, phycocyanin and polysaccharides, that can help to purge toxins from the body. In 1994, a Russian Patent was awarded for spirulina, deeming it a medical food for reducing allergic reactions from radiation sickness. This was a result of 270 children in Chernobyl consuming five grams a day for 45 days. Radionucleides were lowered by 50% and allergic sensitivities were normalized.
Critical For Removing Toxic Heavy Metals
Spirulina is essential for removing heavy metals such as mercury, aluminum, lead, cadmium, and toxic copper from the liver, reproductive system, intestinal tract, thyroid, and brain. Getting rid of these metals gets rid of some of the most favored food of viruses, which are behind many chronic illnesses and symptoms, including autoimmune diseases.
When consumed within 24 hours of each other, barley grass juice powder, spirulina, cilantro, wild blueberries, and Atlantic dulse provide the most effective method on the planet of removing heavy metals. These foods each have their singular strengths, performing slightly different roles in the detoxification process.
During the removal process, metals can get “dropped” or dispersed back into the organs, at which point another member of the team will swoop in, grab the metal, and continue the journey toward the finish line. I call this “pass the football.” On its own, each individual player isn’t 100 percent effective; as a team, they are your anti–heavy metal secret weapon!
Important For Any Chronic Illness & Symptom
Spirulina is an important supplement for anyone with any chronic illness or symptom, or for anyone who wishes to help prevent illness or symptoms in the future. As shared in Medical Medium, Thyroid Healing and Liver Rescue, spirulina:
An Athlete’s Best Friend
Spirulina increases stamina levels in athletes and its rich nutrient content and bioavailable protein content helps build muscle mass. It can curb hunger that may develop during demanding training routines, helping to maintain an athlete’s ideal body weight.
Other Potential Benefits: Promotes healthy eyes, great for anti-aging, helps protect against infection, great for digestive health, increases absorption of nutrients from food, eliminates mercury and other deadly toxins commonly inside the body, helps prevent the onset of cardiovascular diseases, and more.
Healing Tip: High-quality spirulina is the best protein powder you can use in morning drinks and smoothies. Try having it in the Medical Medium Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie daily for tremendous benefits. It is the easiest to digest and by far the most beneficial out of all the protein powders. It deeply replenishes the body with much needed mineral and micro-nutrients. It’s a whole food vitamin and mineral and protein powder packed into one.
Tasty Tip: Sprinkle over watermelon or add to Thai coconut water.
Nearly everyone is deficient in vitamin B12 today. Even if you get a blood test that shows your vitamin B12 levels are normal, that doesn’t mean it’s usable B12 that’s absorbing where it needs to in your body. Your central nervous system, liver, or other organs may still be severely deficient, and a deficiency of the right kind of B12, which is B12 that’s a combination of both methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin, sets the stage for all kinds of symptoms and conditions to develop or worsen. Lack of B12 is a very real deficiency with very real health consequences. The body relies on B12 for tens of thousands of daily functions.
Illness & Symptom Recovery
Whether you have acne, SIBO, eczema, weight problems, depression, allergies, cancer, seasonal affective disorder, anxiety, ringing in the ears, thyroid problems, aches and pains, rheumatoid arthritis, memory issues, brain fog, or any other symptom or condition, the right kind of B12 is important. A high quality B12 with methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin at the proper dose can get someone recovering and on a path of starting to heal. For suggested doses of B12 and other helpful supplements for many different symptoms and conditions, you can refer to the information I include in Cleanse To Heal.
As with all supplements, some are junk and even harmful, and some are excellent. I include the highest quality options on my preferred supplements page of my website to help you know what’s really good. I don’t sell supplements; I’ve simply listed the products I know work.
Support for Fatigue, Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar, Restless Legs, POTS, Parkinson’s, MS & Other Neurological Conditions
A high-quality B-12 that contains both adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin is a valuable supplement for someone suffering with any neurological symptom or condition. For one, B12 with adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin bolsters and protects the brain and central nervous system.
Secondly, this particular type of B12 contains electrolytes, which help counteract the storm happening in the brain when someone has a condition affecting the brain or is under stress. These electrolytes also help protect and restore brain tissue. Thirdly, the right B12 boosts you mentally and emotionally.
B12 with adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin can help with anxiety, bipolar, depression, ALS, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, panic attacks, migraines, restless legs syndrome, POTS, fatigue, tremors, and every other symptom or condition–even those that aren’t neurological.
It is critical to focus on building up your immune system if you have any symptom or illness or want to prevent sickness in the future. One very important way to do that is to supplement with B12 with methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.
Protects Against Viral Damage
As I share in my books, viruses are the most common cause of all kinds of chronic illnesses and conditions, usually in combination with toxins of some variety. You can read more about “The Unforgiving Four,” which is what I call the four major factors contributing to chronic illness and symptoms, in Life-Changing Foods. One of these four factors is viruses.
When fighting a viral-caused symptom or condition, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, eczema, psoriasis, tinnitus, vertigo, thyroid problems, PCOS, Lyme disease (for the truth about Lyme read Medical Medium), lupus, dry skin, brittle hair, prostate conditions, and many more, it is essential to use a B12 blend of both adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin. Including a methylfolate supplement along with this B12 blend is especially helpful.
Vitamin B12, as adenosylcobalamin with methylcobalamin, protects your entire body from neurotoxin damage from the many mutated strains of the Epstein-Barr virus, shingles and other harmful viruses. It also repairs and strengthens the areas of the nervous system and other parts of the body that have been damaged by viruses. This type of B12 also helps strengthen neurotransmitter chemicals in the brain so it can stay strong against the viruses that are behind so many neurological illnesses.
B12 and Elevated Biotics
A special probiotic film covers the leaves and skins of fruits and vegetables. I call these probiotics elevated biotics, or elevated microorganisms, because they cover the above-ground surfaces of raw, unwashed (or lightly rinsed) plant foods. I share about these special microorganisms in all my books.
Unlike factory-produced probiotics and soil borne organisms, elevated biotics are able to survive your digestive process and make it to your ileum, the final section of your small intestinal tract that creates the vitamin B12 critical to your body’s functioning.
One reason to address at B12 deficiency (by getting more elevated biotics) is that B12 keeps homocysteine levels down, which translates to less inflammation in the body. Plus, the B12 specifically produced by elevated biotics is vital to brain health, because it fortifies our neurotransmitters, boosting mental function and keeping depression at bay. Without B12, we die. It’s that critical.
Whenever possible, grow any plants of your own that you can, whether it’s tomato plants, apple trees and beds of kale or it’s just indoor potted herbs or sprouts or microgreens you grow on your kitchen counter. Eat these plants unwashed or very lightly rinsed to remove just the dirt. Don’t soak or scrub them. If you have a trusted farmer you have a relationship with and you know their growing practices very well, you could also eat their produce unwashed or with a very gentle rinse. This is a great way to get these elevated biotics. In addition to the right B12 supplement this is great way to start restoring your B12 levels in the forms the body needs.
Gene Mutation and Methylation Issues
B12 is critical to your body’s ability to methylate many other nutrients. The liver relies on this B vitamin and stores large quantities of it, delving into it continually as part of regular organ function. It also relies on B12 for a function the liver can perform when it’s out of stock of essentials: the ability to produce trace amounts of certain nutrients and chemical compounds on its own. The liver can only do this when it has its key ingredient, B12, in enough supply to send it out to your brain, the rest of your nervous system, your heart, and other places in your body that desperately need it.
When the liver doesn’t have enough B12 already on hand, no B12 coming from what can be produced in the ileum, and the liver is too compromised (from viruses and their byproduct) to produce B12 for itself, a serious methylation issue can arise.
If you’ve been given an MTHFR gene mutation diagnosis, know that over time the right kind of B12 can reverse it—because it fixes damage in the body that triggers off false positives on gene mutation tests. Surprised? You read that right: gene mutation issues are not actually genetic and can be healed. I share why this is the case and give a full understanding of methylation and gene mutation issues in Liver Rescue.
Your liver doesn’t have to do any work to convert B12 into a usable form when it’s in the adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin form. This type of B12 helps with liver cell communication, improving the ability of cells inside the liver to transfer information to one another with ease rather than resistance. It also protects nerve tissue that enters and runs all through the liver.
Vitamin B12 is highly instrumental to all of the liver’s over 2,000 chemical functions and highly instrumental in activating the liver’s ability to utilize, process, and distribute all other vitamins and minerals that are stored inside of it. B12 helps keep a liver out of stagnation, strengthens hepatocytes and all other liver cells as well as liver lobules, and prevents the liver’s blood vessels from atrophying. For more on how to properly support your liver, which is critical if you have any symptom or condition, along with the undiscovered truth about how the liver works, refer to Liver Rescue.
Avoid B12 Injections
The right B12 supplement is a better choice than B12 injections. These injections do not contain the right kind of B12 blend and have the potential to trigger an overreaction in a sensitive body. Plus, B12 has to be taken orally to be effective. When we take oral B12, it gets absorbed into the digestive system, where it’s “tagged” and made active and bioavailable, so that when it enters the bloodstream, it’s in a form that our nerves and organs accept. The B-12 supplement I prefer can be found here.

Chemical and food sensitivities can make life incredibly difficult. All of a sudden you may find yourself reacting to one thing and then another, and another still—maybe the air freshener at the dentist’s office, or the cologne being sprayed at the department store or an ingredient in a meal you’ve always eaten without problems.
The irritation and symptoms can start to build: headaches and migraines, fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, insomnia, tingling and numbness, anxiety and depression, a runny nose, a tight chest, the feeling that you can’t breathe deeply or breathe properly, a funny taste in your mouth or a tingling tongue.
Chemical and food sensitivities are an extremely frustrating and difficult challenge to navigate. Science and research don’t yet know much about these sensitivities. Chronic illnesses and symptoms of almost all kinds are still a mystery. But chemical and food sensitivities can be especially frustrating. The lack of understanding from medical communities, combined with the fact that people’s reactions are often unseen to the outside world can leave sufferers feeling invalidated within an unsympathetic world.
The good news is, I can tell you where these sensitivities begin and how to heal them. It all stems from your liver. If you suffer from sensitivities you’ll learn how to heal in Liver Rescue: Answers to Eczema, Psoriasis, Diabetes, Strep, Acne, Gout, Bloating, Gallstones, Adrenal Stress, Fatigue, Fatty Liver, Weight Issues, SIBO & Autoimmune Disease. Even if you don’t have chemical or food sensitivities at this point, you’re still being affected by toxins. We all are. You’ll still benefit from learning more about the incredible organ that is your liver and how its health, or lack thereof, contributes to hundreds of chronic illnesses and symptoms.
I have a lot of compassion for people who have sensitivities. Living with this issue means that an invisible, unpredictable threat and trigger can be around any corner or sitting in any meal.
Out in the world they never know when they’ll inhale some pesticides being sprayed at the park or find themselves driving behind a truck that’s shooting out exhaust. But it becomes a catch-22 because they also wonder if materials in their homes are causing problems: mold, off-gassing from furniture, carpet cleaning chemicals or the flame retardants in their mattress–to list just a few. On top of that, the triggers seem to move and shift, and all of a sudden that natural shampoo you’ve been using for years and the breakfast you’ve always eaten seems to be a problem too.
People’s fear starts to rise. They wonder, “What could trigger it next?” “What’s going to happen next,” “Am I going to die?” “What’s safe?” “What is happening to me?” “Do I have to live in a bubble?” It’s easy to become anxious and obsessive trying to figure out how to deal with it all. I can completely understand why.
Your Liver the Hero
Your liver is basically a big sponge with the job to collect, catalog and filter everything that comes into your body. Your body takes in what I call liver troublemakers (I explain these in detail in Liver Rescue), including toxins, in a variety of ways.
You can inhale toxins, like the chemicals in conventional perfumes or the fungicide your neighbor is spraying next door. You can eat or drink toxins, through the additives in your food, the ingredients in your medication or the chemicals in your tap water. You can also absorb toxins through your skin, like the chemicals used in conventional deodorant or the chemicals sprayed on wrinkle-free clothing. And then your body can also create toxins. For example, when you’re under stress, your adrenal glands pump out adrenaline as a protective measure, but adrenaline is abrasive and especially toxic to your brain.
Pathogens are another category of troublemakers for your liver and body. Viruses and bacteria, including many undiscovered mutated strains, are everywhere. Those viruses can make their way into your liver and find a home there. Then the pathogens feed on other toxins and in doing so they release waste byproducts that I call neurotoxins and dermatoxins, which cause problems for your nervous system and for your skin respectively. (By the way, one common virus is Epstein-Barr (EBV), which is responsible for many of the symptoms that lead people to a mistaken Lyme disease diagnosis. Learn the truth about Lyme disease in my book Medical Medium).
Your liver wants to capture as many troublemakers as possible to keep them from damaging the rest of your body, especially your heart and brain. Your liver is a selfless hero. It grabs the most dangerous toxins and locks them deep inside itself with the hope it will be able to release them safely later. The liver also works to neutralize certain troublemakers, or in other words to make them less harmful so that they can be safely eliminated and detoxified without hurting the body.
The Liver’s Working Too Much Overtime
The problem is your liver can only do so much. Since the time of the Industrial Revolution with the use of toxic heavy metals and the advent of harmful chemicals, the liver has too much on its plate. We’re born with troublemakers we’ve inherited from our past generations, and then the burden continues to grow.
To make matters worse, modern diets are full of unhealthy foods, many of which contain harmful additives, preservatives and pesticides. On top of that, people are eating too much fat—which is an extra burden to the already-overworked liver, because fat takes more effort to process. It doesn’t matter whether your fat is from the best organic, pasture-raised animal products or whether it’s from the cleanest plant-based vegan diet. The bottom line is, people are eating too much fat.
Even someone eating a low-fat diet often needs to do more to support the liver, such as drinking 16 ounces of pure celery juice every morning and eating more leafy greens, because we live in such a toxic world. I talk more about what to do to support your very-busy liver in Liver Rescue.
As the liver continues to become more and more burdened, eventually the reactions come out. People who suffer from chemical and food sensitivities often have guesses about when and why it started. They remember the day when their house was painted. Or the day they walked through their condo development while it was getting treated with pesticides. The time they ate a gluten-filled cupcake. But that’s not the whole story. These triggers were simply the last straw. They’re an indication that something has been wrong for a long time, and problems have been mounting. The sensitivity was on its way, and the final trigger got noticed when your liver couldn’t handle the burdens any longer.
Toxins are the Reality
The deeper truth is that the cause of sensitivities is chemicals! We do live in a toxic world, unfortunately. Our conventional laundry detergents, makeup, air fresheners, and perfumes—they’re all full of poisons. Even Christmas trees are sprayed with something. Even all the food on a cruise ship gets topped with chemicals to protect and preserve the meals.
People who react to the poisons we’re inundated with are living demonstrations of the truth that these chemicals are harmful. We need to minimize using them wherever possible or our health problems will only continue to mount.
Outsiders sometimes view people who have sensitivities as “crazy” or as “hypochondriacs.” That is, unless the reactions are obvious, like an anaphylactic response to eating peanuts. Ironically, research and science doesn’t have a cure to the problem they created—all they have is another “remedy,” for example you can use an EpiPen after eating that peanut.
The other unsympathetic and extremely damaging response to chemical or food sensitivities is that someone has “attracted” the problem or has “manifested” it through their thoughts, emotions or other issues. Of course it’s true that we all want to work on positive thinking and good energy and spiritual development and generating the best of what we want in life. But the idea that you have created your own illness is not only completely wrong; it’s also disrespectful and dismissive of all you’re going through. It’s especially disastrous when young people believe this theory—not only are they struggling with their physical health but now they themselves are to blame. This can totally shake a young person’s foundation and ability to cope emotionally, mentally and physically. It creates shame, isolation and dangerous pressure.
This is what happens when science and research and providers don’t have the answers for chronic illness, including for chemical and food sensitivities. But there are real causes, and real solutions. We need to find compassion for ourselves and for others who are suffering. Lives can be saved when we do.
Freedom from sensitivities takes time, and it is a more difficult detoxification process. But it is absolutely possible. I’ve helped thousands of people heal from chemical and food sensitivities over the decades. Even if you’ve become so sensitive that you can’t handle most supplements, you aren’t stuck. Note that this can often be because you’re using the wrong kind of quality of supplements. You may tolerate high quality supplements, like those on my preferred supplements page, at low doses just fine. But there are answers with food. You can heal by drinking pure celery juice on an empty stomach every morning. And by eating lots and lots of fresh fruit and leafy greens.
You can heal by following the advice in Liver Rescue. Immerse yourself in all the Medical Medium information from my books, website, Facebook and Instagram. I put out all kinds of free information because I want you to heal. I want you to become experts on your own health and know how to move forward with healing.
If your nervous system is really sensitive, you may still react to certain exposures after you even heal. You’ll still need to work carefully with foods and try not to get too much exposure to triggers and toxins as you heal. Remember too that you aren’t the problem and you never were. It’s valuable to be a sensitive person. Your heightened awareness about the perils of our world makes you gifted and can help you protect yourself, others and our planet. You know the truth because your body is showing you.
Take it one day at a time. I support you.
